1. Why is the theory of evolution so important in understanding how human beings behave?
In the past decades, scientists studying evolution have studied on fossil records and animal morphology to painstakingly piece together the puzzle of how animals evolved. Nowadays, more and more scientists are using DNA evidence collected from modern animals to look back hundreds of millions of years when animals are first evolved. Carroll, who wrote a lot of evolutionary biology, said, “Evolution encompasses all of biology. It is our big picture.” Therefore, theory of evolution is always related to the biology. Moreover, according to the book titled “The DNA of Consciousness”, it states: “We now know that all human beings living today trace their genetic history some 90,000 plus years back to the heartland of Africa.” Therefore, the revolution in DNA technology has been a major advance because DNA is used for evolutionary history, and the history is comparison of the DNA sequences of various genes between different organisms. In the video titled “Evolution Explained in Four Minutes”, it explained genome which is very unique information for each person. Human beings are unique. The theory of evolution can tell people a lot about the relationships of organisms that cannot be correctly inferred from morphology.
2. Which questions do you think evolutionary theory cannot answer?
First, I think there are two questions that evolutionary theory cannot answer. The first question is, where did life originate? It is because scientists only studied animals which were already alive, and they believe there is no such thing about reproduction of rocks. As the result, the theory of evolution fails to explain where the first life came from. More importantly, in the video of “Evolution Explained in Four Minutes”, evolution, for example, natural selection, occurs over successive generations and means the differential reproduction of genotypes. Therefore, it does not care about the origin of life. Second, I think evolutionary theory cannot answer why natural selection is taught as evolution. Natural selection is defined as selective process, which means selecting from existing and known information; therefore, it is not a creative process. It may explain why genes benefit creatures more in certain environments, but not where they came from in the first place. In the conclusion, evolutionary theory cannot answer the question mainly about how and why the origin of life is.
