Week 3&4 Essay Questions
1. Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy?
Understanding physics is very important because it can have an impact on how philosophy is interpreted. Physics helps us understand the study of matter and energy. According to the book, Quantum Weirdness, physics concerns what we say about nature. Also, in that book we read about how Physics gave the opportunity to Einstein and Bohr to contribute their ideas and make their own theories. For example, Einstein's theory of relativity, and this was all possible because of physics. In the other hand, Philosophy is the study of f general questions that have to do with existence, reality, knowledge, language and other things. Both philosophy and physics are two different things but when you use them both they help solve a lot of different things around us. An example where we see a mixture of both physics and philosophy is the quantum theory. All this reasons are why I believe understanding physics and the general rules of the universe are important in doing philosophy.
2. What is eliminative materialism? Provide three examples of it.
Eliminiative materialsim is a claim is that people's common sense understanding of the mind is false and that certain classes of mental states that most people believe in do not exist. For example, in the video eliminative materialism part one it is mentioned that us people turn to different explanations such as biology, psychology, or even sociology to find the answer we seek, and if those options can not answer it we might even say "well God did it".In the second part of the video "The Death of Thor", examples are provided for some explanations for some events. The first example is, Thor and how he was believed to be the thunder God and they give the explanation of how electrical magnetic currents might occurred. Another example was, instead of talking about causes of disease and the cause that they might come from viruses. Last example was, instead of talking about ghost, talked about our central nervous system. In the video it explains that they eliminated the Gods or spirits and provided a more physiological explanation known as eliminative materialism.
