Week 3
The question why understanding physics and the general rules of the universe are so important in doing philosophy is clear. The book “Quantum Weirdness,” explains why you need to have an understanding of physics and philosophy. It gives us a quote saying “two aspects of a description that are mutually exclusive yet both necessary for a full understanding of what is to be described.” By reading this quote you can see both are unlike from one another but are meshed together at the same time as well. These two disciplines work in trying to discover and grasp the concepts of the universe. The objective of philosophy would be to set up the framework. They build on asking questions and guidelines. Philosophers start to reach their goals when they discover multiple ways might be true and prove how it is true. All of physics groundwork and foundation is because of philosophy. One subcategory of science is physics. Physics answers questions about the natural world through math, theories, and laws. Physics seems like the logical part of the problem so thereby it answers the questions that a philosopher might seek. These two disciplines both constantly look for the truth about the universe.
Week 4
Eliminative materialism is the process of elimination of different categories of science to prove that myths and folktales are not true. Three examples are shown through the eliminative materialism videos part 1, 2 and 3. The first video had stated that if a phenomenon can’t be explained through science and through the sub categories of science then God did it. The second video claims that we replace the old with new. That instead of thinking Thor raining down with thunder we talk about electrical magnetic currents and instead of ghosts pulling our bodies around we say it’s our nervous system. In the last video they talk about how reason is writ large within eliminative materialism. With these three videos we get a break down of the many parts of how eliminative materialism works. It’s a process of finding out what answer is old and which one is more accurate. In the book “Is the Universe Really Made of Tiny Rubber Bands?” the boy wanted to know if the world was made up of tiny rubber bands because when he discovered a golf ball was he wanted to know if other things were made up of rubber bands. He then found out about atoms and then electrons, neutrons and protons and eliminative materialism is how it all happened he started with one thing and the discovery process went on from there.
