1. Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy?
In my understanding is that philosophy is required for you to know and understand. You need to know it so you can explain it. It is important to understand physics and the general rules of the universe in understanding philosophy is because they are similar. Understanding physics and the general rules of the universe will answer the questions that philosophy provides. As I read Andrea Diem-lane’s Quantum Weirdness: Niels Bohr’s Times, In Physics, Philosophy, and Polity, Under the Philosophy part it states that the complimentary concept refers to and is applied to not just physics but also to philosophy, psychology, biology and anthropology. In the words of Bohr “two aspects of a description that are mutually exclusive yet both necessary for a full understanding of what is described.” (pg.40) it’s obvious that what this statement means is that you need to understand physics and the general rules of the universe and philosophy all at the same time. The Quantum Theory is a good example of the mix between both physics and philosophy. In order to understand philosophy, we must be able to grasp an understanding on everything in the universe.
2. What is eliminative materialism? Provide three examples of it.
In my understanding of eliminative materialism is what eliminates ideas or the theories that don’t explain certain things. We stick to what we know only. The definition of eliminative materialism is “a materialist position in the philosophy of mind. Its primary claim is that people's common-sense understanding of the mind is false and that certain classes of mental states that most people believe in do not exist.” My understanding is that eliminative materialism is an opinion that we as individuals have on a certain thing, belief or topic. One example eliminative materialism would be eliminating the god in place of science or vice versa, like if you can’t prove it with science and studies then it’s because of god. Another example is the belief that spirits cause diseases we replace that idea with the idea that bacteria causes diseases. Another idea I can think of is when our body jumps when we are asleep we think that it is a spirit moving us but in reality it is our central nervous system just working. There are many things that we think it’s this or that but it really is because of something else. There is an explanation to everything.
