1. Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy?
Well when you think of Physics in general it is the study and break down of atoms and all things that are made out of atoms. Philosophy is the break down of basically trying to understand the meaning of life. With that being said to understand the meaning of life you need to be able to understand what makes us life. When it comes to any science really its to break down things more and more till there’s nothing more to break down. Biology basic study of nature, basic structure of plants and bodies. Chemistry is the study of what was mixed together (so to speak) to create something. Like what chemical reactions needed to happen to make plant cells to make a plant. Physics the break down of what the chemicals are made out of. The atoms. They all go hand in hand. You need one to understand the other to understand the other. Physics it very important to philosophy because to understand life you need to be able to understand how it all came to be.
2. What is eliminative materialism? Provide three examples of it.
At first I was having a bit of a hard time trying to understand the meaning of eliminative materialism, but I talked to my boyfriend about it and he had a really good way of understanding it. He said to think of the movie the “Matrix”. For those of you who don’t know the movie, it is basically about a man who gives the main character the choice to take one of two pills. One pill will keep him in the world he has been living in his whole life, living it the way he perceives life, doing the same things over again, ever day, for the rest of his life knowing that there is the other pill that he could have taken. The other is the “real” world. That pill will help him view the world as it should, and he can’t go back to the way life was for him.
Well that is what eliminative materialism is basically all about; each person has a different interpretation of how some things can be. Lets take religion for one example, Christians and lets say Buddhists. Christians believe that if you don’t believe in their God you will go to hell. Buddhists believe in reaching enlightenment. To be the best person you can be. Two totally different perceptions on living life.
Another example I have is of 3 people and a desk. One person can say look at this desk here and touch it, the 2nd person can say “what desk?”. What is the 3rd person going to say? No matter what that 3rd person says one of the other 2 people will not believe that 3rd person.
That is basically what eliminative materialism is, stating that the way we perceive things is wrong.
