Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy?
I feel that understanding the physical and the general rules of the universe is so important in doing philosophy because in order to do philosophy and be a philosopher you need to understand many things. Matter is a big subject in philosophy and in order to better understand matter and to find out exactly what it is and its existence physics can help to understand scientifically what matter might mean. Physics discusses and looks into the nature and the properties of matter. So its important to understand physics in order to understand matter more efficiently. Philosophy is a widely expanded topic and subject. It is important for philosophers to understand physics because this might change their way of thinking for better or worse. It is important to know as much as you can about the subject you are studying in order to find new discoveries and theories. In the book Quantum Weirdness it talks about how physics involves what we say or may know about nature. This is what makes others and also philosophers question what we may know about nature.
What is eliminative materialism? Provide three examples of it.
Eliminative materialism basically is a theory that peoples understanding, their common sense of the human mind is wrong and also that certain degrees of the mental state does not exist like we think they do. Others believe that because eliminative materialism is poorly defined and does not have a secure argument it is a false way of thinking. An example of eliminative materialism would be when we try to find the solution to something and we use all theories that might be necessary such as scientific theories, reasoning, and philosophy theories. If we are not able to find the solution then others would look to god for the answer saying he did it. He is the reasoning, this would be considered eliminative materialism. Another example of eliminative materialism might be Helios driving the sun across the earth but we all know that the earth revolves and rotates around the sun. One last example of eliminative materialism could be Hume who says that there is no persisting subject of experience. I think I would say that not all things have been proven and have an answer to it and I would agree with the theory of eliminative materialism.
