Week Three and Four
Q. 1 Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy?
It is very important to understand physics and the general rules of the universe in doing philosophy. After reading the book named “Is the universe really made of tiny rubber bands”, and the videos for this week I reached a point where I realized that the study of physics and philosophy are immersed in each other as well as are very interrelated. Physics is basically the study of matter and the energy produced and reflected to create and generate the general rules of the universe. Adding to that, philosophy on the other hand represents the philosophical aspects of the study and understanding of reality, as well as existence. To add, in general we have the concept of physics as a way of or a tool we can use to understand and resolve the problems and what is hidden in this universe through being practical whereas philosophy is study the theoretical aspects of this universe. In saying so, we see that both physics and philosophy are interrelated. Therefore, we come to a conclusion that understanding physics and the general rules of the universe is important in doing philosophy.
Q.2 What is eliminative materialism
Eliminative materialism is a philosophical term that represents the philosophy of mind and the structure of how the mind produces thoughts and ideas in different ways. It is a phenomena that can be explained and understood through many aspects and concepts in this life such as biology, physics, chemistry, sociology and so on. Eliminative materialism focuses on having humans understand that their general knowledge that is derived from the mind is false and does not exist. The main purpose of eliminative materialism is that it denies the existence of intentional states. Basically it does not believe that there is belief and desire. For example, believing that death and sickness occur when there is corruption and bad luck. Adding to that we have Helios who believed that the sun turns around the sun whereas the earth rotates around the sun. Moreover, there are other aspects that the eliminative materialism cannot explain such as sleep, and nature of intelligence.
