Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy? 2. What is eliminative materialism?
“ fire lives the death of earth, and air lives the death of fire, water lives the death of air, and earth lives the death of water.” - beliefs of philosopher Heracleitus
After the readings and films for this week, the on ideology that resonated with me is the one mentioned above in the film about the history of philosophy. To me the quote is so simple but it is everything but simple at the same time. That quote is this universe. Elements, everything this world is, everything we are, are all elements. A combination of forces. Physics and general rules of the universe are the platform that philosophy are built upon, why? Solely because there are so many different beliefs and theories for why we are, and who we are. Why are here? What are supposed to be doing while we are here? What is our purpose, what is the purpose of this universe. They are questions that remain, and for some they are questions that are already answered whether it be through science or religion, but no matter that fact that we seek out these answers gives birth to Philosophy. Philosophy can never die, because the mind is so rapidly alive and this universe continues to exist. Therefore man will forever seek explanation, for the things we can and not explain. However, proven physics and universal laws provide a grounds for us to stand upon, it provides a starting point, some form of a road map as we travel towards universal understanding and balance.
Eliminative Materialism is a system of belief that seeks out to uphold science as the platform of explanation. It is exercise of science to form explanation before religion. It it is a chain and discovery that starts with Mathematics, and lastly God. The thought is that whatever can not be explained by a study of science, will then be considered an “act of God.” There are several examples of eliminative materialism if by examples it is our methods of explanation of this universe by science. Mathematical Theory is an example of Eliminative Materialism, because it sets out to provide explanation for the world around us through science. Physics is a form of eliminative Materialism because it is the study of matter formation and formulated explanation of the universe around us, and how physical beings and objects function. Psychology is addition is a form eliminative materialism, however psychology is not one of the preferred methods of eliminative materialism being that in the film the study of Psychology was only a few steps before God. Psychology is the study of the human mind, and seeks to provide explanation of the human conscious and mind and how we function within the universe. Eliminative materialism gives little to no room for religion or the belief in God to be used as an explanation of the function of the universe.
