Why was Socrates sentenced to death? 2. Why is there a conflict (for some) between science and religion?
Socrates as sentenced to death due to charges, that he did not believe in the gods appointed by the state, in addition to the belief that his beliefs were “corrupting” the youth within the city. It is my belief that Socrates being sentenced to death and his form of death were very symbolic and hold significant meaning. Even during the days before his death Socrates still continued to maintain his philosophy about life and still expressed that to his friends and loved ones that came to see him. His last words to his dear friend, were to remind his friend that there as a debt that they owed that still needed to be paid. Only one that firmly believes in his/her ideologies even in the face of death will still firmly stay grounded within their teachings and ideologies. Socrates death sentence, requires him to die for the consumption of poison. To me this is the same thought the courts had about Socrates’ teachings, they felt it was “poison.” They saw Socrates as a threat poisoning the mind of those who listened to his teachings including the youth. Youth innocent vessels whom minds intake information and form thoughts and beliefs that will soon shape the world they govern during adulthood. So how symbolic is it that Socrates is forced to death by poisoning, while the government and his accuser believed Socrates was poisoning the mind of the youth and his followers.
The conflict between science and religion, is that oftentimes the ideologies of each make it heard to believe in both consecutively. Science seeks to provide formulated explanations for the world around us, while religion solely places all explanation in the faith that there is a higher power (GOD) that governs all creation and behavior. There are some human minds that are not satisfied with only believing that the world functions by the hand of one BEING. Scientists seek to break down how everything was created and how everything works together as one. Science is calculations, nothing within science goes without question, however religion teaches you to never question GOD. The professor’s reaction to the students sharing of Plato’s cave is clear image of the frustration that exists between science and religion. Are we here just to be here, is the world forever evolving, where did we come from, what is our fate? These questions that science continuously asks, and religion tell us that GOD has already provided us with an answer.
