Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
Socrates was sentenced to death by the poison hemlock and was executed in 399 BC. He was accused of corrupting the Athenian youth at his teachings. A young man came fourth and said that Socrates had he created new gods while denying the existence of other gods. Socrates was also suspected of not believing in the city gods and was accused of introducing other gods.
Socrates defended himself by admitting that he upset many of the townspeople by refuting their wisdom. After hearing a story about the gods and an oracle, Socrates became convinced that people who believe they are wise in anything are only proving they are not wise because they do not take into consideration all the things they do not know. His actions were mimicked by many of the upper class youth and later traced back to Socrates. People were upset both by his personal actions and implanting these ideas into their children. As a result he was labeled as an impious heretic.
Why is there a conflict between science and religion?
There is a large conflict between science and religion because they explain the world around us using different methods. Science focuses on the material makeup of our surroundings and the laws of the natural world. Religion explains our existence and the spiritual forces that act upon our lives. Science is limited by the intellectual limitations of our brains such as concrete provable explanations while religion explores concepts and ideas that transcends our limits of understanding such as life after death. An example is how science attributes human consciousness to a cluster of neurons near the front of our brain that ceases functionality after our deaths. Religion, however, argues that are consciousness is a result of our souls and it continues to thrive even after our body dies.
The best union of science and religion is to accept that there is no definite level of understanding in either fields and further exploration is always possible.
