1. Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
Socrates was a very wise and intelligent Greek philosopher. He was unruly sentenced to death because of his own beliefs. He did not believe in the Greek gods that everyone thought so highly of. Another reason for his sentence was due to the rumor of him corrupting the youth. Most believed the corruption derived from his teachings to the youth. They believed that he was trying to pass his beliefs unto the youth and corrupt what is pure. During his trial he did not confirm nor deny to the claims against him. Instead he explained how he felt and did not plead innocence for his actions. On his last day he spent it with his friends from which were dear to him. In the end Socrates was forced to drink hemlock which took his life. The man died believing in his beliefs and that was good enough for him.
2. Why is there a conflict (for some) between science and religion?
The reason why there is such a conflict between science and religion is due to certain aspects of each. For instance science believes that there may be other universes other than the one that is just the one which we live in at the moment. Another aspect is the fact that even though something may be in fact correct such as Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. He is still up for change and scrutiny that it may be in the future that his information is invalid. Another example stems from the fact that “if we don’t know what a single thing ultimately is (even if we can know various things about a material item, we are circumscribed in our knowledge about comprehending all of its various dimensions and interconnections), do we even know where we are ultimately?” What this means is that even though we may not know all the aspects we are open to questioning and nothing is absolute. Whereas on the other hand religion believes that you must follow and not question the belief. That what religion are absolute and that path is the right path; Even though they have no real evidence to support their theory. Religion believes that that we should succumb to this already accepted idea.
