1. Socrates was sentenced to death for two reasons. The first reason was his non belief of the gods that were recognized by the State. The second reason was that people believed that he was corrupting the minds of the Athenian youth. As the book states, Socrates did not confess or deny the first charge that was presented to him. Nervetheless, he was condemned to drink the poisonous hemlock drink. Before his death, he expressed that dying would only allow him to pass into a better and happier life.
2. Science and religion can conflict in many different aspects. As it pertains to science, they believe that the universe was created in a single large phenomenon known as the big bang. As for religion, gods or a single god was credited for the creation for the universe and the creatures who dwell in it. Which ever one you would happen to believe in, it conflicts with the other theory. The ironic thing that seems to be lost in the fights between religion or science is that neither group truly knows how the universe came to be. From theories or stories left behind from ancestors and prophets, the truth will always be that it is always second hand accounts or something that has not been proven.
