1. Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
Socrates is sentenced to death for two main reasons. The reason is Socrates is charged with him not believing in the gods that were recognized by the state. The second charge Socrates is that he had corrupted the Athenian youth by his teachings. Socrates either denies or confesses for the first accusation. For the second charge he is meets by a cross examination of his accuser Melitus. Socrates is found guilty by the judges and is forced to die by drinking the poisonous hemlock. In the end of the “The Apologia” which represent Socrates on trial for his life, which were documented by his student Plato it is said in the reading that, “As expressing his belief that in going to his dead he is only passing to a better and a happier life”. Socrates gets to say goodbye to his friends and family and at the end he drinks the poison and lays himself down on his back and dies.
2. Why is there a conflict (for some) between science and religion?
Religion and science both create conflict for many individuals. In the reading, The Great Mystery Matter vs. Spirit, it is explained on how many of us have different distinctions for example when they mention that religion is based on beliefs and faith, where as science is based on more evidence and theories. For a lot of people this where conflict is started many who are religious might believe a certain thing and when science is brought in to prove if it true or false it shows that it might not be true. Many scientist believe that we are made of matter and they have different theories and evidence that can prove that. However, this may not be the belief for someone who has certain beliefs because of their religion.
