2 Essay Questions: 1. Why was Socrates sentenced to death? - Socrates was sentenced to death for 2 reasons. One was "corrupting the youth" and the other was "impiety". He "failed to acknowledge the gods that the city acknowledged" and "introduced new deities". I believe that Socrates was trying to teach the way he believed. Because this was going against every one else's ways, this caused conflict and did lead to being sentenced to death. Unfortunately, at this time, there was only one way. I believe it is important to hear other people's opinions and perspectives in order to gain a broader understanding of topics.
2. Why is there a conflict (for some) between science and religion? - Some people were raised with religion, and some were raised more non-religious. I would imagine it would be hard to understand someone else's perspective on a topic if it was going against everything you were taught. Sometimes this erupts in conflict. If you cannot understand someone's view because it is conflicting with what you believe to be right, then you will strongly disagree with that person. I try to be understanding of all people and idea's that they want to share. Whether or not it goes against what I have been taught, I always keep an open mind to not only avoid conflict, but to possibly learn something new and hear someone else's perspective on a topic.

Hello Jacqueline,
I agree with your point of view on religion. Most people believe so strongly in their own (religion) that they would not possibly think that another can be right. That's how they are raised. I am the type of person that is open to other religions, I have my own beliefs but I had been curious on how other people practice religion and I was surprised, some are not that far off from Christianity. Have you listened in on other religions?

Hi Jess,
My mom was actually raised as a Christian and my step father is Jewish. I have always been very open minded to learning about different religions as I like to learn about new things that I may have not known before!

Hi Jacqueline,
After reading your post, I agree with your point that Socrates was very valiant when he was suffering the hard time. I also found that during the time of trial, Socrates’s students tried to help him to escape; however, Socrates rejected this plan because he understood that he must abide by the law of the city. As you said, he was not afraid of judge and even dead. More importantly, he was a rightful and responsible person. This is also one of the reasons why I am so appreciated him.

Hi Jacqueline After reading your post I feel like our description and response to the first question why Socrates was sentenced to death seems to be linked. We clearly explained the two main reasons why he was sentenced as well as the way he was killed. To your other answer to the question why is there a conflict (for some) between science and religion? I highly agree with your argument. I highly feel that it is hard for people to change their beliefs and philosophy when the thought of change goes against it. People are are less likely to agree when they highly disagree of that possibility of being wrong or accepting that it may be right. What is crucial is to keep an open mind.
