Week 7-8 Essay Questions
1. The virtual simulation of consciousness theory is based on the idea that consciousness has given human beings the ability to ponder decisions and choices through a thought process that may not in fact be reality. This branching off from reality through consciousness gives conscious beings over creatures without consciousness because unlike humans, their choices are driven by the real world and its basic reality of life and death. According to the "Brain Burn" video, "in consciousness, you can play as if it is real and project all sorts of in-game earnings to see which one would be to your advantage." This heightened awareness and internal virtual gameplay allows us to examine multiple scenarios and possible outcomes in order for us to be able to survive globally and in different niches, as the video also states.
2. The brain tricks us by believing certain things are reality when they are simply a product of our imagination. In a basic sense, "The Disneyland of Consciousness " video describes this by using the example of a woman thinking a machine operated figure on a Disneyland ride is actually a real person so much so that she actually walked up to it and asked it for an autograph. This phenomenon can be explained by our mental process that causes the brain to "believe its own machinations as exterior to itself and not as a byproduct of its own interiority." In other words, the brain often takes in false information and causes us to see and believe something that we think is out there on the surface but in reality it is just something we imagined and isn't really the truth. The benefits to our brains playing tricks on us are multiple, but basically this perceived reality gives us a sense of security and understanding. Even if what we have believed to be true is false, brain trickery can shield us from a truth that we may not be able to conceptualize or handle from both a mental and physical standpoint.
