1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
I very much do think that artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future. Technology is growing and advancing at a far more rapid pace than we actually realize. People are becoming subconsciously lazier, and having to think for themselves less and less. Actually, referring back to the book “Is the Universe an App?” there’s a really interesting quote stated as follows, “But this very trickery should give us a clue on how to better understand the appearance of self-awareness both to ourselves and others.” Explaining this quote a bit, previously in context it spoke of how artificial devices are being created with such complexity that they are actually making humans believe that those devices are indeed human and not robotic. In my opinion, this definitely shows us how already technology is advancing to make us believe certain non-human things, could indeed be human. In the film Zombie Consciousness 101, it talks about conducting a test called the “Turing Test.” The test is about how a device will be able to trick us into believing it is human. It explains how the line between reality and artificial intelligence will ultimately be blurred. This is obviously a significant problem for us humans in the future, because there will be a time where it will be difficult to determine reality and artificial intelligence. When that time comes, if it isn’t happening already, who are we to say that the things we are learning, listening to, and seeing, are real, or simply an artificial intelligence?
2. How has technology impacted your life?
Technology has immensely impacted my life, and it’s not all for the best either. My parents never allowed texting, video games, and strictly limited our computer time. At the time, being the age I was, I obviously hated it. Now, I definitely appreciate how strict they were on technology privileges, because it taught me that it is possible to enjoy your time without all the technology around us. Unfortunately, once I moved out and was able to make my own decisions, I bought an iPhone, got texting, and bought a really nice laptop that I barely know how to use. I’ve become very dependent on my phone, which I don’t like. The thought of not having a smart phone scares me a bit, and the fact that that scares me, is the scariest part of it all! Although, technology does have its benefits. If it weren’t for the technology advancements of today, I would not be able to take online classes, or retain information so quickly and easily. I remember when I was much younger, my parents would take us on summer road trips all over the country. Because my parents were a little behind on technology we never had a GPS, which meant in order to get to our destination, they would only use an atlas. They didn’t have yelp to find the nearest hotel or restaurant, or didn’t have a satellite GPS. The fact that they were able to get around without technology that I use on a daily basis, baffles me. I wish I didn’t rely on technology so much, because truth is, your phone battery isn’t invincible, wifi isn’t everywhere, and sometimes service is unavailable. When that happens, it’s difficult to accomplish what I need in that moment.
