Explain the virtual simulation theory of consciousness.
Our virtual simulation is our subconsciousness mind believing something we might be feeling or thinking, is in fact reality. In the video Zombie Consciousness 101 it is stated "that consciousness evolved as a virtual stimulator which gave us prior options before acting out in a real world."(Z101 Video)Anything and everything that goes through our minds, can feel as if what is happening, is truly happening. Not only our thoughts but even things we might see in everyday life. "Consciousness is a fantastic virtual simulator and because of its inclusivity and insular engineering it has an inherent tendency to believe its own machinations as exterior to itself and not as the byproduct of its own interiority." (Universe App,75) Sometimes what we might hear, touch, smell or feel may not be the same thing or process that is going through our mind. By being able to use our virtual simulation gives us access to parts of our mind that we would not naturally use. Our virtual mind allows us to answer questions to our thoughts, act on the thoughts we would not probably act on in reality.
How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival?
Our mind is a miraculous part that make up who we are and how we think. Our personality, decision-making, risk-aversion, all that could easily change. How amazing is it that our minds can subconsciously know how we truly feel and help us come up with answers to our questions. In fact if it was not for our brains playing tricks on us, would we ask questions? Probably not. For example, in The Disneyland of Consciousness video, a older woman went to see Mr. Abraham Lincoln in a Disney theater. Clearly in the 1960's President Lincoln was not alive however, the machine playing Mr. Lincoln looked like a real human being to this lady that she just had to meet him. However to her surprise, it was just a machine. The point being that our minds play tricks on us, sometimes confusing our true reality with a unreality version. However, our minds could also be a answers and helps us predict what our future looks like. About a year ago, I had a patient. When I was about to finish my long 12 hour shift he grabbed my arm and said goodbye. I explained to him that I would be back in the morning. He explained to me that he had a dream earlier,on how he was going to die and he would not be here in the morning. I did not believe him as he was getting better medically and only 53 years old. Unfortunately he was right. As I was coming in to get report, I was told he did not make it and died late the night before. I was in shock. How did he consciously know that he was going to die that night. Did his body naturally know that he was not doing well? To this day I always ponder how did he know for sure? Because he had a dream? Our minds can play many tricks on us no matter what state of mind we are in. In the video Brain Burn it was said best that " Every deep question we have, every deep thought we ponder, is the result of the confusion of a neural system confronted with it's own dissociation...consciousness is dissociation.”(NS Video) So in every deep question, or thought are we subconsciously predicting what could happen, like my patient? Or are we already knowing the answers to our many questions? I believe that we will never fully be able to access the capacity of how our minds truly work.
