1. Why is Faqir Chand's experiences important in understanding the projective nature of religious visions and miracles?
As per the video, Inner Visions and Running Trains, Faquir’s experience was important because he, “revealed that all gurus of whatever stripe were ignorant about the real cause of the miracles and visions attributed to them.” As per the video, Faquir also stated that because of this ignorance, “the guru gained power, attention and devotion from disciples who incorrectly imputed omniscience and omnipresence upon such teachers, even though they had neither.” Faqir made it clear, that some guru’s intensions were done for selfish reasons. He also didn’t call them liars, but ignorant to this, but as per the book, The Unknowing Sage, “Those who say that they have known are wrong. On one can describe or even know the entire creation. Up to a certain extent to which man’s mind has access, one can say something. But nobody can tell about the entire universe.” Faqir’s honesty was admirable.
2. What is meant by the phrase, "philosophy done well is science; philosophy done poorly remains philosophy."
As per Patricia Churchland’s comment in the book, Circle of the Wise, “As theories develop, and as hypotheses become confirmed, they sort of “hive off” the mother body, they “hive off” of philosophy, and they become a specialized discipline, like chemistry, or physics, or cosmology..” Philosphy starts off as a theory, but if done correctly, it becomes something that could be proven. It tranitions into science. If a theory cannot be proven, then it simply stays as philosophy. As Patricia Churchland states, “ Science is open, science is critical, science reviews and revises itself, and that’s what makes science science.” If philosophy can be proven, it then becomes science.
