1. Why is Faqir Chand's experiences important in understanding the projective nature of religious visions and miracles?
Faqir Chand’s experiences were important because he exposed the truth on religious visions and so called miracles because it is basically an experience of being consciousness of the visual aspect of this life. This occurs through meditation called “Yoga”. Through this out of mind out of body experience as stated in the book The Unknowing Sage he “enables one to experience regions of light and sound beyond the normal waking state, providing glimpses into higher realms of consciousness". Through this they are enabled to experience a whole new state of being of consciousness of this life. A prime example would be the visions he had that saved his units and his life during a war in 1919 in iraq. His visions of his guru giving him sage advice and providing him with the wisdom to avoid certain death at the hands of rebels he and his unit were fighting at the time, gives us insight into how stress can manifest itself into what one would describe as a real experience much the same experience that or dreams provide us in our unconscious state. Upon his returning to Baghdad and being told that it was he who was speaking to others in their visions at the same time he was speaking to his guru made him realize in the end that what we view as universal visions of religious significance are merely impressions that are in truth unreal to all that is except the believer.
2. What is meant by the phrase, "philosophy done well is science; philosophy done poorly remains philosophy."
The phrase “philosophy done well is science; philosophy done poorly remains philosophy” means that when it is done well it ends up acting as science and when it is done poorly it remains as just philosophy. This is true with the disciplines of science. Many of the scientific theories that are in today’s society have a basis in philosophy. Scientists, such as Einstein and Bohr had a great belief and respect for philosophy. If philosophy is practiced poorly well then it is just philosophy because, it has no scientific basis. Philosophical theories such as, Eliminate Materialism is one example of philosophy turning into something that can be proven by science. This theory is easily proved by science. Some scientific theories such as, Quantum Mechanics at first was philosophy but now today it is the basis for physics. This just shows that “philosophy done well is science; philosophy done poorly remains philosophy”.
