1. Explain the virtual simulation theory of consciousness.
In the book “Is the Universe an App?” The virtual simulation theory of consciousness is explained. Gerald Edelman says that there are two states of consciousness. The primary consciousness is what animals have. Animals are not conscious of being conscious. But as humans we are “conscious of being conscious” (P.85). As humans are able to recall memories, ideas and experiences and at the same time we can plan and make future decisions. The second nature of awareness is considered the “evolutionary advantage” The consciousness allows you to plan. (P.86). “Consciousness is a fantastic virtual simulator and because of its inclusivity and insular engineering it has an inherent tendency to believe its own machinations as exterior to itself and not as the byproduct of its own interiority.” (P.75). The understanding I got from reading The Haunted Mansion part is that the world around us is not what we think it is that we see. In our consciousness it is different. It is a virtual simulator in our head that makes us perceive and believe things are a certain way. The way our mind makes “simulates” things and situations we experience every day and we act on it based on how we understand what we see.
2. How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival?
Reading “Is the Universe an App?” The Disneyland of Consciousness is a good example how the brain tricks us and makes us believe in the fantasy. “There is no scientific finding that compels us to think of ‘X’ as either conscious or non-conscious, living or non-living, intelligent or non-intelligent.” (P.69) Is Dr. Salmon’s argument. This is because there is no scientific methods that tell us what lies behind what our mind constructs or percepts. Our mind has the capability of make us believe the fantasy things are real. Our consciousness mistakes the things that represents human awareness with things that are not alive or real and then after taking a second look at things you realize that they are just perceptions that the mind has to confuse you or make you believe that they are real. Like the Pirates of the Caribbean (P.73) I can relate to that example because that ride seems so real when you go through and see all the pirates and they look straight at you and you think they are real people. They look so realistic that when you get off the ride you have to come back to reality and remember that it isn’t real. But during the time you are on the ride you are all into it and believe in that fantasy.
