WEEK 7-8
1. Explain the virtual simulation theory of consciousness.
It is basically a hypothesis that reality could be stimulated. The mind putting itself in a virtual reality that makes the mind believe things are real when they in fact they aren’t. For example, it is said to believe that when people are on acid they mention seeing images elevating or claiming to see dragons and other odd images. To them this is true because at that moment their mind was stimulated to see this."Consciousness is literally a virtual stimulator" (Brain Burn film). The virtual simulation of consciousness is a theory in which the idea what is "real" is challenged. In reading “Is the Universe an App?” the theory of consciousness as a virtual is discussed in great depth. During an interview with Discover Magazine Gerald Edelman explains humans as having two fundamental forms of awareness 1) The primary in which he explains being a state of awareness held by animals which allows them to live only within their own present state of well being and by not having any consciousness of the present or the past. In addition Edelman explains humans are “conscious of being conscious” as humans can recollect past memories or experiences while being capable of deciding future decisions. Edelman explains that our “consciousness of being conscious” as the second form of awareness which is our “evolutionary advantage”.
How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival?
In reading “The Cerebral Image: The Deceptive Nature of Awareness”, we are introduced to the idea that the world around us is not what we think it is. This book discusses many ideas about how our mind plays tricks on us by perceiving what we think and feel to be real. Although, the book discusses how our mind interprets the world around us and forms illusions of what we may believe to be reality when in fact it may not be real at all. These perceptions and illusions that we have in our minds are discussed in terms of how they have been able to benefit humans which has then lead to the progress of our kind.
