Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
I do think that artificial intelligence is certain in our near future. The term used in the book Digital Philosophy, GPI (Global Positioning Intelligence), explains very well a system in which our information is readily available for anyone else to find. We are now very available and open about our daily activities and whereabouts. Anyone can easily access that information from their smart phone. We are a social animal and psychic animal (Lane and Diem-Lane 2). Our quest for knowledge and intelligence will inevitably lead us to creating an artificial intelligence which replicates our own. As explained by Ray Kurzweil in the video Ray Kurzweil: The Coming Singularity, we have already reverse engineered a number of different regions in the human brain for example the cerebellum and cerebral cortex among others. He predicts that by 2029 well will have reversed engineered the human brain completely. I do not foresee artificial intelligence to be a problem, as long as we are aware of the limitations that artificial intelligence should possess and do not allow it to surpass our own intelligence.
How has technology impacted your life?
Although technology has had a great impact on my life, I do not think I am a slave to technology. I of course, like most people nowadays, enjoy the convenience that technology has given us. From having the knowledge of the world on my fingertips with my smart phone, to paying all my bills online without having to leave my house or buy stamps. GPS technology has definitely made it easier for me to get around and find locations that I would have otherwise struggled to locate. But when it comes to social media, I am not a very big fan. I do not find it absolutely necessary to share so many details of my life with so many people, even if they are my chosen friends. As stated by Lane and Diem-Lane, everyone with a smartphone will invariably turn their cars around to secure the device they have forgotten (5). I have done this a couple times when I have left my phone at home, but it is because I like to have my phone on me in case of an emergency, not so much because I have to be on it 24/7. When I am home, I sometimes forget where my phone is because I am so busy doing other things that do not involve the any type of technology. I think that technology has definitely made our lives easier and more convenient, but it can also hinder us in so many ways if we do not know how to part from it every now and then.
