Q 1. Explain the virtual simulation theory of consciousness?
The virtual simulation theory of consciousness, is having an image or an imagination of the action that we plan to do. It is the visual picture of the thoughts and awareness that goes around in our minds and brains. As indicated in the book Is the Universe an App, “consciousness is not physical”, and that this world is only “an illusion”. This quotation is saying that the world we are living in today is not real and it is only a virtual simulation. Adding to that, the book also stated that “Although we can hear, smell, and touch our reality, what determines our conviction that this world is real is not so much based upon objective datum as it is on our subjective feeling of certainty.” Basically this theory is trying to explain that it is what we believe in what exists externally from our inner side. In the video Consciousness as a Mobius Strip it was stated that “consciousness is a thing that can be described among other things, it is the context not the content of what it is experiencing.”
Q 2. How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival?
The brain sometimes works and plans to trick us into believing some of the aspects we think about to be real whereas in real life they are just ordinary tricks the brain is playing. As indicated in the book the, Is the Universe an App that “We are too easily duped by magical tricks, too easily deceived by the confusion of cause and effect, too easily mistaken by the conflation of an object with its image.” The brain exactly works like a magical trick, it tries to make us live a world of imagination. In the short film The Disneyland of Consciousness it was stated that an older lady has mistakenly believed that “the man sitting on the stage is a real human being, she actually went up the stage and shook his hand.” This lady imagined the fake man to be a real one and in this situation here we have the brain tricking her in so many ways.
