Week 3 and 4
Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy?
Philosophy analyzes ideas and tries to explain them. In my opinion philosophy is the observation of everything and how everything may work. Physics and the general rules of the universe is important in philosophy because physics enables philosophers to be able to understand and validate their theories and why it is possible. I found it interesting that the discussion of string theory in the film, The Elegant Universe, it is stated that if the string theory cannot be tested then it would be considered philosophy instead of physics. In my opinion philosophy intertwines with physics because a philosophical question must be asked in order to be able to develop a theory that can be proved with physics. And if in fact the theory cannot be tested and transition into something else itMa still be a philosophy.
What is eliminative materialism? Provide three examples of it. Be sure to support your answers with references to the required readings and films.
According to the required films Eliminative Materialism, part one, two and three, “as a materialistic explanation evolves over time you will either eliminate or reduce….inexplicable phenomena..” Elective materialism allows us to better understand why things occur, it gives us the reason with supportive knowledge. Our mythic past and its concepts where replaced with current terminology and scientific explanations. The films uses the examples of Thor the Thunder God was used but now talk about electromagnetic currents. Instead of explaining diseases being cause by spirits, now we talk about bacteria and viruses; Instead of ghost pulling our muscles now we explain it by the central nervous system. We have eliminated the mythical causes of many things and have replaced them more precise and truthful cause.
