Week 3-4 Essay Questions
1. Having a great understanding of physics and how the universe works is very important in the study of philosophy because of how it helps explain philosophical theories. In other words, having knowledge of things such as quantum physics, the creation of matter and other scientific laws can help one understand and appreciate what philosophy has to offer. Furthermore, the laws of physics allows mankind to make philosophical theories and questions. If you don't understand how the universe works, how can you question it and form your own opinions/theories about it? It would be impossible to do so which is why physics and philosophy have always and will always go hand-in-hand.
2.Eliminative materialism is basically a belief that humans beings' common sense is skewed and that the different mental states that humans have do not actually exist. This belief also less towards the idea that because of the illegitimacy of the human state of mind, things are to be understood through a scientific perspective, which many philosophers refute. The required videos for this class gave us three ways of looking at eliminative materialism. The first is the "God did it" thought process where God is the answer to a question that cannot be explained through a variety of scientific lenses. An example of this is determining why humans have love for one another. Since it cannot be explained by science, we conclude that love is an act if God. The second video refers to replacing old ideas with scientific terminology due to the advancement in our knowledge of science and how the universe works. An example is instead of talking about Thor, the thunder god, we now talk about electromagnetic currents. The third video talks about how as we develop better explanations for things through science, we eliminate all other types of thinking. An example is thinking that certain diseases are result of evil inside of your body but then realizing that diseases can be explained through a scientific perspective. As a result, we eliminate our belief in devilish acts causing certain diseases.
