5. Why is the theory of evolution so important in understanding how human beings behave?
The theory of evolution is so important in understanding how human beings behave because it helps us learn about our genes and traits. Our environment is constantly changing and evolving and the theory of evolution helps us explain the changes. Charles Darwin came up with the quote “survival of the fittest.” It mostly means that growing up you both change and adapt to the change that is happening around you or you go extinct. The genes and traits within us are because of several changes our ancestors and their ancestors before them made. In our world, on our earth there are a variety of numerous different features we all have. Evolution is more than just our genetics. It involves our cultures and generations before us. Every culture has a different way of eating and a different way of surviving. The theory of evolution can help us understand why a human can be genetically immune to getting the virus HIV. In the video “The Genius of Charles Darwin,” the microbiologist can see this trait being more dominant in the future. The roots of HIV are helping scientists find a vaccine through evolution. HIV and SIV have common genomes and by finding out the origins of HIV they can search of a vaccine.
6. Which questions do you think evolutionary theory cannot answer?
I think the questions that the evolutionary theory cannot answer would be one the origin of the universe, two how we have two different sexes, and where and when life began on Earth. In the book “The DNA of Consciousness,” there’s a quote that explains why we don’t have all the answers. “Our brains didn’t evolve to understand the universe but to literally “eat” it.” The book also says that “we don’t know the truth; we simply know what it takes for us to live skillfully enough so that we don’t get eaten too young.” We can try to figure out the answers but if we even long enough our redundant enlarged cerebral cortex will make nonsense make sense. Evolutionary theory cannot answer every question due to the fact the theory is there to make sense of what is already here.
