1. Why is the theory of evolution so important in understanding how human beings behave?
1. The theory of evolution is so important for human life. As the Genius of Charles Darwin film states, “It explains a huge number of facts and everything we know about life is explained by it.” It shows us where we came from and how we have changed throughout the millions of years our ancestors have existed. The Genius of Charles Darwin film also talks about natural selection and the race for survival. A surprising amount of organisms don’t quite make the cut of natural selection. Maybe a bird’s beak was just a bit too weak or a cheetahs sprint was a second too slow. It is more like “natural elimination” as stated in The DNA of the Consciousness. Looking back at the race for survival and how only sufficient genes end up passing the finish line we can see how evolution is important in understanding human behavior. Our ancestors before us succeeded in passing this test and passing on their genes. We try to do the same and therefore alter our behavior to best succeed in that endeavor. There are differences around the world that will lead to the finish line and human behavior is altered to try and pass, but the end result is the same. Humans, like every other organism, either adapts to its surroundings and reproduces or fails.
2. Which questions do you think evolutionary theory cannot answer?
2. The theory of evolution and natural selection are a great way to look back throughout our ancestor’s history and see where we’ve come from and which genes succeeded. One question I don’t think can be answered with evolutionary theory is where our species and other species are going to end up millions of years into the future. If we just look at humans for now, what obstacles will we face as a species in the future and how with our species adapt and change to persevere over those obstacles. Scientists can see how the lands will change in the next few decades, but since humans have greatly changed in the small course of our history due to our advancement in technology there is no knowing what obstacles may arise and these obstacles may arise from our own doing. Another question not answered by evolutionary theory is what happened to the soul of all those organisms before us. Science and religion have not always played nice but it’s very possible to believe in the evidence science provides and also in religion. Sure science shows us what these fossils looked like and how they evolved throughout time, but religion is needed to know what has happened to the soul of the organism. In the film, Darwin’s DNA, it’s stated that while science is the same everywhere around the world, religion changes from place to place. Each person’s religion may offer an answer to where a soul ends up that suit them until science concludes a definitive solution; however, that may never happen.
