Essay question number 1:
Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
Socrates was sentenced to death for not believing in the same gods as the state, and for teaching his beliefs to the Athenian youth. Socrates states, “he brings a wonderful accusation against me, which at first hearing excites surprise: he say that I am a poet or maker of gods, and that I invent new gods and deny the existence of old ones; this is the ground of his indictment”. (How Socrates Died, pg 6) Meletus was afraid that the beliefs and teachings of Socrates would influence everyone to become believers in his Gods and his teachings. His accusers think that Socrates is conjuring up new gods and trying to convince everyone, through his teachings that the old gods are non-existent. It is for these accusations that Socrates was unjustly sentenced to death, which his sentence was ultimately carried out by way of poisoning.
Essay question number 2:
Why is there a conflict (for some ) between science and religion?
Everything and everybody is made up of what science calls Matter. The conflict that is between science and religion is the interpretation of the term “matter”. Scientists and religious scholars have very different views on what matter is and how it came to be, “ the guy who just verbally assaulted you is a fundamentalist Christian and he thinks your publication contradicts the bible and insults his religion”. Christians believe everything and everybody has been created by a higher being, God, whereas scientists believe everything and everybody just evolved from dirt. For some people that believe in the way of religion of how matter came into existence, might be scared to even consider what science has to say in fear of having doubt in the God they believe in. The people who believe the views of science, believe matter is made up of atoms.
